Microsoft Surface Pro 5 may not launch at Shanghai event, hints executive

Panos Panay, head of Microsoft’s Surface division, recently tweeted that the company will be holding an event on May 23 in Shanghai, along with the hashtag ‘#Surface’. The media went abuzz soon after the tweet, speculating the launch of the much-rumoured Surface Pro 5 . But it seems like the device won’t be seeing the light of the day anytime soon.
In a recent interview with CNET website, Panay said that the Redmond -based tech giant will be launching the Surface Pro 4 successor “when it’s meaningful and the change is right.”
He added that the upcoming change might not be in the hardware, which most customers seek. “They’re like, ‘Where’s the latest processor?’ That’s not what I mean. I’m looking for an experiential change that makes a huge difference in product line,” he said.
Citing a few examples, Panay said that the device could have a massive battery life or weigh extremely light.
“You’ll see that same meaningful impact when the Pro 5 or Pro Next hits the market,” said Panay. He quickly added that “there’s no such thing as a Pro 5.”
Now that Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is out of the question, it’s being speculated that the company might bring Intel’s Kaby Lake CPUs to the Surface Pro 4 as well.
For now, all eyes are glued at Microsoft’s upcoming Build 2017 developer conference, which is scheduled for May 10-12 in Seattle, Washington.

Microsoft recently launched its new cloud based OS – Windows 10 S – along with the Surface Laptop. The new version is aimed primarily at the education sector and is designed to run even on low-end devices.
