Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 2.0 at Namo Ghat in Varanasi and flagged off the Kashi Tamil Sangamam Express between Kanyakumari and Varanasi. During his speech at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, a groundbreaking experiment was conducted using a new real-time Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based translation tool named ‘Bhashini’ for the Tamil-speaking audience. This marked the first-ever use of AI technology for translation during the prime minister’s speech.
Encouraging those from Tamil Nadu to use earphones for a better experience, PM Modi highlighted the introduction of new technology through Artificial Intelligence. The prime minister expressed hope that this initiative would make it easier for him to connect with the audience. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded the use of ‘Bhashini,’ describing it as an exciting step taken by the Prime Minister’s Office. She emphasized that ‘Bhashini,’ a digital product of the National Language Translation Mission, worked in conjunction with Artificial Intelligence to translate PM Narendra Modi’s speech into Tamil in real-time.
‘Bhashini’ is an AI-based language translation system designed to enable individuals to communicate in their native language while conversing with speakers of other Indian languages who may not understand the language being spoken. The system is accessible through dedicated Android and iOS apps. Additionally, the app includes a ‘Bhasadaan’ section, allowing users to contribute to various crowdsourcing initiatives.
PM Modi’s two-day visit to Varanasi involves the launch and inauguration of 37 projects valued at more than Rs 19,000 crore for the city and Purvanchal. In his address during the inauguration of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, the prime minister highlighted the special bond between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, emphasizing that those from Tamil Nadu were more like family members than mere guests. He welcomed everyone to the Kashi Tamil Sangamam and noted that the event furthered the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.’
PM Modi expressed the unique connection between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, comparing the journey from one Mahadev’s house to his other house, and from the place of Madurai Meenakshi to the place of Kashi Vishalakshi. The prime minister acknowledged the distinct and special love and bond between the people of Tamil Nadu and Kashi.
