In a recent interview, renowned meta scientist Yann LeCun made a bold statement that challenges the common notion surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on jobs. Contrary to widespread fears, LeCun believes that AI will not destroy jobs forever. Let’s delve into his perspective and explore the reasoning behind this intriguing claim.
One of the three Godfathers of AI, Yann has AI will not dominate the world or permanently eradicate jobs. During a press interaction held in Paris for Meta, Yann LeCun expressed his views on the concerns regarding AI posing a threat to humanity. LeCun dismissed these fears as “preposterously ridiculous.” He acknowledged that computers might eventually surpass human intelligence, but he emphasized that such a development would take years. LeCun’s solution to alleviate any apprehension was straightforward: if anyone felt that AI was unsafe, they should simply refrain from building it.
According to a BBC report, one of the pioneers in the field of AI, has dismissed concerns that AI will dominate the world or lead to permanent job losses, calling such fears “utterly absurd“. His comments are contrary to the “other godfathers” Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, who called AI a threat to the human race. LeCun said that the whole idea of AI taking over the world was a projection of human nature on machines.
In his words to BBC,
It would be a huge mistake to keep AI research under lock and key.
“It’s as if you asked in 1930 to someone how are you going to make a turbo-jet safe? Turbo-jets were not invented yet in 1930, same as human level AI has not been invented yet. Turbo jets were eventually made incredibly reliable and safe, and the same would happen with AI he said.”
Meta’s extensive AI research program encompasses the goal of developing intelligent systems that match human capabilities. In addition to their research endeavors, the company leverages AI to identify detrimental content on social media platforms. Speaking at an exclusive event for invited press, Professor LeCun shed light on his own work in the field of Objective Driven AI. This branch of research aims to create secure systems with the ability to retain information, engage in reasoning, plan effectively, and exhibit common sense—a set of features that are notably absent in popular chatbots like ChatGPT.
