Airtel Ties Up With Liquid Telecom For Fibre Network

Bharti Airtel is all set to tie up with Liquid Telecom to share its fibre network and connect its mobile base stations in Africa. If all goes as anticipated, Airtel subscribers in Africa would soon be able to enjoy uninterrupted internet at a faster speed on their 3G and 4G devices.

With this framework agreement, Airtel operations would leverage Liquid Telecom’s existing 20,000km-long fibre network across Central and Eastern Africa. The company further announced that it will make use of Liquid Telecom’s terrestrial fibre network to join its mobile base stations and enterprises.

“Mobile operators are relying on Internet access and data services to grow their revenues. Airtel has managed to attract a large number of customers on their 3G and 4G networks and now need to strengthen their backhaul to deliver a super-fast Internet access service,” Nic Rudnick, Group CEO at Liquid Telecom, said.

While Liquid Telecom is an independent data, VoIP provider offering fibre optic and satellite services, Bharti Airtel is a leading telecom operator which has operations in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Chad, Ghana, Kenya etc.

Commenting on the agreement, Airtel Africa CEO Christian de Faria, said, “Airtel has invested significantly in mobile broadband technology across its African footprint and this agreement will deliver end-to-end fibre connectivity to our 3G and 4G base stations. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to providing affordable and innovative mobile services to all.”
