Amazon’s Prime Now 1-Hour Delivery Service Launched in London

Amazon.com launched its one-hour order delivery service, Prime Now, for some areas of London on Tuesday, about six months after introducing the service in the United States.

“We now offer one-hour delivery or same-day, two-hour delivery windows on thousands of items in select areas of London,” the company said on its UK website on Tuesday.

Amazon Prime members can have orders worth GBP 20 ($31.43, or Rs. 2,000) or more delivered in one hour for a fee of GBP 6.99 (Rs. 700). Two-hour to same-day window deliveries will be free, Amazon said.

The service will be available for orders placed between 8am and midnight, Amazonsaid.

Amazon Prime is a paid service that offers members free delivery and access to a huge catalogue of films, music, books and video.

Amazon launched Prime a decade ago offering free, two-day shipping – at first charging $79, then raising the service to $99 last year. It launched same-day delivery in 2009.

Amazon launched Prime Now in parts of New York in December and expanded the service to other cities including Baltimore and Miami.

In May, Amazon said it will offer limited free same-day delivery under its Prime shipping service as retailers try to outdo each other on delivery deals, and expanded the service to San Diego and the Tampa Bay Area.

Amazon’s announcement in May came within days of rival Walmart saying it plans to test a new unlimited online shipping service this summer. Google also recentlylaunched its Express shopping option that allows retailers that do not have same-day delivery capabilities, to use its network in certain markets.
