Apple may launch 6.1-inch LCD iPhone with 18:9 screen this year
Apple is preparing to unveil three iPhones this fall. Ahead of the official launch, rumours and leaks about the handsets have already started surfacing online. Two of the three iPhones will seemingly come with an iPhone X like OLED display, while the third model — which is said to be an entry level device — will come with a more advanced LCD display compared to the previous iPhones, suggests a new report coming from Taiwan’s Commercial Times. The report claims that Apple may try its hands on Japan Display’s so-called “Full Active” LCD technology for one of the upcoming iPhones. The LCD display iPhone was earlier rumoured to come with a 6.1-inch screen, however, the new report suggests that the screen size could be around 6-inches. According to Japan Display, its Full Active LCDs are 6-inch displays and comes with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels and have an 18:9 aspect ratio. This means that the length of the upcoming iPhone may be double its width. This also suggests that the 6.1-inch iPhone may sport a taller display, although not as tall as the iPhone X which comes with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. As mentioned, the new report suggests that the device may sport a 6.1-inch display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels which is around 395 pixels per inch. This report contradicts what KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier said — that the upcoming 6.1 inch iPhone will have around 320-330 PPI. Well, this is not the first that a report hinted at Full Active LCD display for the upcoming iPhone. Previously, a report by WSJ also suggested the same. It mentioned that Apple will possibly consider using Japan Display’s advanced LCD panels in some 2018 iPhone models. We have earlier seen Full Active LCDs on Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2. Out of the three iPhones that Apple has planned for 2018, one will resemble the iPhone X — basically will be a direct successor to last year’s iPhone X. On the other hand one — as mentioned earlier – will be a cheaper device – it will be the one with the Full Active LCDs. This will allow Apple to sell the 6.1-inch iPhone at a much cheaper price point. Previous rumours suggested that the upcoming Full Active LCD display iPhone will come with include an aluminum frame instead of stainless steel, single lens camera at the back instead of the usual dual-lens. The device is also expected to not sport 3D touch — as suggested by Kuo. KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that the upcoming 6.1-inch iPhone will be a mid-range device and could be priced between $700 and $800.
