Apple to Introduce ‘Apple Intelligence’ AI Service in iOS 18

Apple is set to unveil its latest AI features for its devices at the WWDC on June 10. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new suite will be called “Apple Intelligence” and will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. Users will have the option to enable these features, rather than having them automatically activated.

To utilize these AI capabilities, users will need an iPhone 15 Pro or one of the forthcoming iPhone 16 models. iPad and Mac users will need devices with at least an M1 chip. Apple’s AI functionalities will be driven by its proprietary technology and tools from OpenAI, including a collaboration to support a ChatGPT-like chatbot.

Apple Intelligence will focus on basic AI tasks, primarily processed on the device itself rather than relying on cloud servers. The specific criteria for these tasks are yet to be detailed, but the system will determine whether a request can be handled locally or requires server assistance.

Highlighted features expected for iPhones, iPads, and Macs include:

  • Apple Music: Auto-generated playlists and improved song transitions.
  • Apple News: Summarized news articles generated by AI.
  • Health: New AI-powered features, specifics not yet disclosed.
  • Keynote and Pages: Auto-generated slides and enhanced writing tools.
  • Mail: Categorization of incoming emails, suggested replies, email thread summaries, and text composition aids.
  • Messages: Suggested replies, custom emojis, and message summaries.
  • Notes: Audio recording and transcription tools.
  • Notifications: Summarized notifications.
  • Photos: AI-driven photo editing.
  • Safari: Web page summarization assistant.
  • Siri: Enhanced version inspired by ChatGPT with more app-specific controls, slated for 2025.
  • Spotlight: Smarter search results and better sorting.
  • Voice Memos: Audio transcriptions.

Gurman notes that AI will be a major focus of Apple’s WWDC keynote, occupying about half of the presentation, which begins at 10 a.m. Pacific time on June 10.
