BSNL To Offer Free National Roaming From June 15

The state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited BSNLwill offer free national roaming service to its subscribers starting June 15. The announcement was made by Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

In addition, the Indian government will make sure that the Wi-Fi spots run by BSNL become operational in the next two years. The government is planning to establish around 2500 Wi-FI spots in areas that are major tourist attractions.

NDA government is focussing on making the two state-owned telecom companies, BSNL and MTNL, profitable again. According to the minister, BSNL has been able to register a 2.1 per cent hike in revenue in the last financial year.

Speaking about the mobile number portability, Prasad said that full mobile number portability will come into effect starting July. It is noteworthy that BSNL has reduced the roaming charges by up to 40 per cent for both postpaid and prepaid subscribers after a telecom tariff order came from TRAI. The company also made night calling from landline phones free.
