Coal India Signs Pact For 1000 MW Solar Power Projects

Coal India, the leading producer of coal is planning to improve the quality of its coal in an endeavor to double its production to billion tonnes by 2020.

Coal India chairman Sutirtha Bhattacharya said, “We have tied up with Indian Council of Forest Research and Education as well as National Energy Research Institute to find ways and means of producing coal through measures that would be beyond the mandatory environment norms.

Additionally, we have committed to set up at least 1,000 MW of solar power generation plants in various states to compensate for greenhouse effects,” The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute is going to be working closely with the two institutions to ensure that coal production happens in the most eco-friendly manner and much beyond what the environment department has stipulated.

Apart from this, via its subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields, the company has already invited tenders for setting up 200 MW of solar power generation plants. It envisages to set up solar power generation plants of about 200 MW capacity in each tranche adding up to about 1,000 MW.
