If reports are to be believed, DoT may soon ban taxi hailing apps in Delhi. The department took such a decision, after a woman passenger was allegedly raped by an Uber cab driver in the city last year. Following the incident, the AAP government in Delhi requested the Department of Telecom (DoT) to ban all taxi hailing apps, namely Uber, TaxiForSure and Ola Cabs.
Sources have further confirmed that the telecom department has directed all internet service providers to block the websites of these firms in Delhi and report compliance under the provisions of the IT Act. Meanwhile, there is no nationwide ban.
Though, TaxiForSure was banned in March following DoT’s direction, other applications could not be blocked due to their encryption levels. Recently, the internet service providers have been directed to block the sites. As per the notice issued, action will be taken against them under Section 12 of the IT Act, I case they fail to do the needful.
Currently, there are 19 radio taxi operators in the country, including Mega Cabs, Easy Cabs, Meru Cabs, and Tab Cabs who run about 25,000 cabs across India.
