Elon Musk on why Twitter has to ‘obey’ what goverment say

During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Twitter owner Elon Musk was asked about former CEO Jack Dorsey’s claims that the Indian government had threatened to shut down the company in India.

Musk responded by saying that Twitter has no choice but to comply with local government laws, as failure to do so would result in the company being shut down. He emphasized the importance of following the laws of each country and stated that it is impossible for Twitter to do more than that, adding that one cannot simply apply American standards worldwide.

In his earlier interview, Dorsey had alleged that the Indian government issued threats and sought to remove critical content during the farmer’s protest in 2021. He mentioned that India is a significant market for Twitter and described the threats received, including the possibility of shutting down Twitter in India, raiding employees’ homes, and closing down offices if Twitter did not comply.

However, the Indian government refuted Dorsey’s claims, calling them an “outright lie” and stating that Twitter’s behavior during that period showed a lack of acceptance of Indian law and sovereignty. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar dismissed the idea that anyone was jailed or that Twitter was actually shut down in India.
