imagesEPEAT, which is the environmental rating from US based Green Electronic Council, is now available in India for electronic manufacturers as well as consumers to authorize the environmental impact of these products manufacture or users purchase. India becomes the 43rd country to have such EPEAT listing and verification purposes.

In a event held in Delhi recently, which was hosted by Confederation of Indian Industry Centre for Excellence on Sustainable development, attendees discussed how EPEAT can support and strengthen the Indian efforts to reduce environmental impacts of electronics.

EPEAT stands for Electronic Product Environment Assessment Tools, which rates products on life cycle basis. It deals with noxious removal, usage of recycled products, product design of recycled material, corporate performance as well as requiring manufacturer responsibility collection and recycling of all registered devices.

Manufacturers have to register their devices with EPEAT to ensure the product and service criteria are supported and verified for local markets.(www.epeat.com). To qualify for EPEAT product registry, electronic devices must meet 23-33 environmental performance criteria and a product must get 29 or above to qualify as higher product.

These criteria were developed by a multi-year consensus processes which involved hundreds of representatives from environmental, research, governmental and manufacturing sectors, private and public bulk consumers..
