Months after its ambitious Free Basics program was squashed as 
illegal in India, Facebook is back again, this time, to provide free Wi-Fi on the Indian railway stations.
Indian Railways’ communications arm RailTel, which has a robust optic fibre-based network across some 4,000 railway stations is in talks with the social network to provide free Wi-Fi services to not only to railway stations but also to villages in the vicinity as well.
Interestingly, RailTel has also partnered with Google to launch free Wi-Fi services in 400 railway stations across India, which was announced by CEO Sundar Pichai during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the Silicon Valley in 2015.
