Gmail’s mobile version now offers email translation feature

Google is simplifying cross-language communication for users by introducing native email translation to its Gmail mobile application. This newly added feature, which is now available on both Android and iOS devices, was previously limited to the web version.

In a recent blog post, Google stated, “For years, our users have depended on Gmail’s translation feature to connect with individuals from around the globe. With this latest update, we’re further enhancing the ability for people to maintain connections, irrespective of language barriers.”

The functionality of Google’s new Gmail translation feature involves automatic detection of the email’s language. If the email’s language differs from the user’s chosen preference, a notification banner will appear at the email’s top, offering to translate it.

For instance, if the email is written in Korean but the user’s preferred language is English, a banner with the text “Translate to English” will surface. By tapping on the banner, the user can access the email’s translation.

This banner can be dismissed, or users can opt out of translating emails from that specific language in the future. Users also have the flexibility to personalize their translation settings. They can specify languages they always wish to translate or ones they never want to translate via the settings.

In cases where the Gmail app doesn’t present the dismissible banner, users can manually initiate translation. This can be done by clicking on the three-dot menu at the top-right corner of the email and choosing the “Translate” option. The translation feature is compatible with a total of 100 languages within the Gmail app.
