Google AI health chatbot passes U.S. medical exam

AI in the field of healthcare has shown promising advancements, particularly in medical scans interpretation.

Google’s AI-powered medical chatbot, called Med-PaLM, has achieved a passing grade on a challenging US medical licensing exam, according to a peer-reviewed study.

However, the study noted that the chatbot’s answers still fall short compared to those provided by human doctors.

Google’s Med-PaLM is the first large language model to pass the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

The study also highlighted the development of a new evaluation benchmark to address the issue of “hallucinations,” or false information provided by AI models.

While these AI-powered medical chatbots have potential, experts caution that they should be considered as assistants rather than the final decision-makers in medical diagnosis and treatment. The future use of Med-PaLM could involve supporting doctors by offering alternative perspectives.
