Google has quietly updated its Messages app to support the Ultra HDR image format, allowing users to share Ultra HDR photos through the RCS-enabled Google Messages app.
The update ensures that images sent via the app retain metadata and display accurate colors and details on the recipient’s device.
The support for Ultra HDR was introduced with the Android 14 operating system and is an enhanced version of the JPEG format, providing better dynamic range.
The format incorporates HDR data through metadata for devices with HDR displays, while on non-HDR devices, it appears as a JPEG image.
While Google has integrated Ultra HDR support into its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones and the Android 14 OS, adoption by other OEMs has been slow.
Despite this, users with Ultra HDR images can now share them seamlessly using the latest version of the Google Messages app.
