Google is experimenting with a new chat-style user interface (UI) for responding to emails in Gmail

Google has introduced several updates to Gmail, including emoji reactions and modifications to the search bar.

The latest development involves the testing of a chat-style reply user interface (UI) in Gmail’s Android app.

Currently, users have options like Reply, Reply All, Forward, and new emoji reactions at the bottom of emails, with reply options at the top of the message.

However, Google is reportedly experimenting with a Reply field that will be anchored at the bottom of the screen in the Gmail app for Android.

The design resembles Google Chat, featuring a pill-shaped container with buttons for attaching media and emojis on both sides.

The left button will enable users to choose a reply type and edit the email’s destination account. Additionally, the reply box will offer the option to expand to a full-screen UI with a button on the right side.

Tapping the box opens a keyboard and slides up the reply field, revealing a send button on the right.

This approach allows users to write replies while still viewing the email body for context.

The report did not detail how Quick Replies would function in this UI.

It’s important to note that this change is in the testing phase and not widely available, with only a limited number of users currently experiencing it.

Google is also reportedly working on a voice-compose UI for Gmail, aligning with Duet AI.
