Google launches Google Drive File Stream, retires Google Drive for Mac/PC

Google has announced a new feature for general users that will let them access files saved on Google Drive in an easier manner than before. The search giant introduced its Drive File Stream back in March for limited users but has now rolled it out for all users. This will be replacing the Google Drive folder that was being used by majority of the users until now.
The Google Drive Stream won’t take the space on the hard disk like Google Drive did. “Drive File Stream is a new desktop application that allows you to quickly access all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer, meaning you use almost none of your hard drive space and spend less time waiting for files to sync,” says the G Suite blog post.
The Drive Stream is available for G Suite users. On the other hand, Google Drive for Mac and PC will not be supported starting December 11. The service will shut down completely by March 12 next year. The firm says that by next month Drive for Mac/PC users may start seeing messages in the product notifying them that Drive for Mac/PC is going away.
Users can check the settings of the Google Drive Stream by navigating to Apps > G Suite > Drive and Docs > Data Access. This will be visible to all users within this month.
Google has said that the Drive Stream is switched on for all users. However, it will only show download links in the Drive interface if users show them for Backup and Sync.
Google, for now, is focussed on bringing its Android 8.0 Oreo to masses. The search giant has already started rolling out the OTA updates to those devices that were running the beta versions. The upcoming Pixel and the Pixel 2 devices are also expected to come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box
