Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, has unveiled the tech giant’s latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), including its newest language model, PaLM 2. With over 100 languages and the ability to perform coding, math, and creative writing tests, PaLM 2 is Google’s most advanced LLM yet, operating under the internal codename ‘Unified Language Model.’ The company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, spoke to a live crowd of developers, showcasing how AI is”“helping people reach their full potential.”
The conference focused on the theme of “generative experiences,” highlighting how AI can create new content in various forms, from text to images and even videos. Google has been investing heavily in AI, with Microsoft being one of its main competitors in the ongoing AI arms race. PaLM was first announced by Google in April 2022, with the company launching an API for the language model in March of this year. The API and other enterprise AI tools aim to help businesses generate text, images, code, videos, audio, and more from simple natural language prompts.
According to internal documents obtained by CNBC, Google is also working on a multi-modal version of PaLM called “Multi-Bard,” which uses a larger data set to solve complex math and coding problems. Other iterations being tested include the “Big Bard” and “Giant Bard.” Additionally, Google plans to expand its “Workspace AI collaborator” to improve template generation in Sheets and image generation in Slides and Meet.
