Ten years ago Google had launched Adsense to help publishers earn money by placing relevant ads on their websites. Now Adsense has become a very important part of Google’s advertising business.
In a post on the Google blog, Susan Wojcicki, SVP of Ads and Commerce, reflects on the early days in 2003 when AdSense was a fledgling product to today when AdSense is an integral part of Google’s advertising business.
Explaining the growth of the business venture, Google says, “The AdSense community has grown to include more than 2 million publishers, and last year alone, publishers earned more than $7 billion from AdSense.”
AdSense was born from Google’s 2003 acquisition of Applied Semantics which had developed a contextual search algorithm. Google piloted its content-targeted advertising program in March 2003, and launched it publicly as AdSense on June 18, 2003.
Adsense has gained a database of 2 mn publishers in last 10 years. Google in its blog has said, that “Today as a part , 10th anniversary celebration, we hope you’ll tune into our live Hangout on Air today at 10 a.m. PDT (5 p.m. GMT) on the AdSense Google+ page. I look forward to joining several of our partners to share stories from the early days of AdSense, talk about how we’ve all grown since then, and discuss the future for publishers and online advertising.”
