The department of electronics and information technology has rolled out a beta version of the ‘digital locker’, which would allow citizen to keep all their certificates, from birth certificate to university degrees, in digital format online and access them using their Aadhaar numbers.
Digital locker is a part of PM Narendra Modi’s most ambitious Digital Indian programme. To try it in the beta mode, a user has to a login ID on the website by using his Aadhaar card details. DeitY has also invited comments from the users regarding the usage of this platform on government’s idea crowdsourcing platform myGov.in. Since it is a beta platform and is still in the testing phase, you may not be able to create an account in digital locker successfully. Some users who tried creating their accounts multiple times repeatedly got the message “UID service is not responding. Please try again.”
With this scheme, government aims to provide digital security to the important documents of the citizens like educational, medical, passport and PAN card details in a digital form. The website states, “Digital locker will allow you to securely upload and share your documents anytime, anywhere to authorized users/agencies. The issuer departments will also be able to automatically push the link of your document kept in their repositories.” Maharashtra government and Tata Consultancy Services are jointly maintaining the beta version of the digital locker.
