Indian Railways Join Hands With google To Offer Free Wi-Fi Serivce

Google is all set to join hands with Indian Railways to offer Wi-fi service to about 400 railway stations across the country. Dubbed as ‘Project Nilgiri’, the search engine giant has partnered with RailTel for the infrastructure to commence the project which makes use of Google’s Fiber technology. If all goes as anticipated, users would be able to use broadband at a lightening speed in these locations.

According to the sources, an agreement has already been signed between Telangana State’s IT minister K T Ramarao and Google regarding the ambitious project. Reports further confirm that this facility will be free of the cost to the customers after the registration followed by a mobile number verification. A one-time password would be sent to the users through SMS, after which passengers would able to enjoy free internet.

Interestingly, passangers would not be bound by time and would be able to enjoy throughout the journey. However, the speed will be at a high speed for the first 30 minutes, after which it would get slower.

The project is likely to get completed in phases. The phase 1 which would cover Wi-Fi hotspots at 400 stations is expected to get completed within four months.

Additionally, Railtel which ensures Pan India Optic fiber network through railway tracks in rural as well as urban regions would cover almost 70 per cent of India’s population. Currently, Indian railway offers Wi-Fi connectivity to certain trains in selected routes using satellite communication technology.
