Piyush Goyal, the Union Government’s minister for power, coal, new and renewable energy has stated that the central government is going to switch all street lights to LED bulbs by the end of 2018. This will lead to an annual cost saving of $6 billion. According to him the LED program is being carried out as a “massive enrgy efficiency mission.” He also said that they are making efforts to change all household bulbs with LEDs. The minister stated at the Harvard College US India Initiative Conference that 45.9 million LED bulbs have been dispersed under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme. He pointed out that “When all the 71 crore (710 million) conventional bulbs are replaced by LED bulbs it will result in a saving of 100 billion units of electricity.” There is a distribution target for spreading millions of LED bulbs via the newly formed company known as Energy Efficiency Services Limited. There are over 35 million street lights that produce a total demand of 3,400 MW. LED bulbs can bring there can be electricity savings of 1400 MW leading to a saving of 9000 million kWh of electricity per year.
