HCP market in India was primarily driven by Laser Multifunction Printers (MFPs), which grew 35.3% in 2012. InkJet (primarily A3 and A4 formats), a consumer driven market, recorded a decline of 4.5% in 2012.

“Despite end user promotions and heavy marketing campaigns by all the leading vendors, InkJet market was not able to sustain the interest levels with the end users, who prefer to spend their budgets on other consumer products such as smartphones and Tablets. Peripheral products such as printers remain a secondary product for Indian consumers,” Mohit Raizada, Senior Market Analyst at IDC, said in a company statement.

On the other hand, overall laser market which is a commercial segment driven market, recorded a 13.7% growth in 2012. “With both Government and enterprises preferring MFPs, a clear shift towards Laser MFP was witnessed as the share of Laser MFP increased to 24.6% of the overall HCP market in India”, Raizada said.

In terms of vendor share, HP continued its dominance with 47.7% market share in the overall HCP market with the help of its strong brand image and continued channel partner support, the IDC statement said. Canon too maintained its second spot with a market share of 18.9% followed by Epson at 11.2% for 2012.

“With the help of aggressive marketing and promotional schemes in Inkjet, Canon regained its second spot in 2012 with a shipment share of 19.3% whereas HP continued to be the market leader with 59.5% share,” Nitin Kumar Singh, Senior Market Analyst at IDC said.

In the laser market, HP remained the market leader with 47.9% share followed by Canon with 21.8% share. “Apart from the top 3 vendors(HP, Canon & Samsung), the share of rest of the vendors increased to 17.8% in CY 2012, specially with the growth of upcoming vendors like Panasonic & Ricoh”, said Singh.
