Lenovo has confirmed the latest round of layoffs globally. In an 
official statement the company said that the new layoffs will impact less than 2% of its entire 55,000 global workforce. The company, however, didn’t reveal the exact number of jobs it will be cutting.
These layoffs follow the 3200 job cuts that Lenovo announced in August 2015.
“The majority of the positions being eliminated are part of the ongoing strategic integration between Lenovo and its Motorola smartphone business as the company further aligns its organization and streamlines its product portfolio to best compete in the global smartphone market,” the statement adds.
As per the statement, the company is also making adjustments in other areas of the business as part of a continued effort to manage costs, drive efficiency and support ongoing improvement in overall financial performance.
Terming the actions difficult, the company said, “While these actions are never easy, they are a necessary part of our continued efforts to ensure long-term, profitable growth across all of our businesses.”
Stressing on its commitment to Motorola Mobility headquarters’ in Chicago, the company added in the statement, “Lenovo is absolutely committed to Chicago and we plan to maintain our Motorola Mobility headquarters there. Chicago has a well-deserved reputation for technical excellence and as the hub of our global R&D for our smartphone business we expect to take advantage of local talent to continue developing Moto products there.”
Lenovo acquired Motorola from search giant Google in the year 2014. But starting this year Lenovo started an ambitious integration of Lenovo’s business into the Lenovo mobile phone division. As part of this integration Lenovo has included the Moto products in the overall Lenovo lineup.
