Recent sources claim that Apple is preparing to switch the Apple Watch’s OLED display with a new in-house Micro-LED display. Although there have been many rumours about this changeover, a display industry analyst recently confirmed that it is, in fact, happening.
In the IT community, there has been significant discussion about Apple’s decision to use a Micro-LED display for the Apple Watch. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg earlier stated that Apple intends to adopt Micro-LED panels in the Apple Watch beginning in 2024 or 2025, with components created internally rather than by third parties like Samsung or LG Display.
According to a recent estimate by display industry expert Ross Young, LG Display will start producing Micro-LED parts in the second half of 2024, giving it enough time to make panels for Apple. This information provides additional context for the tale. The transition to Micro-LED technology may enable better contrast, better colour reproduction, and even brighter displays in the Apple Watch.
The high-end Apple Watch Ultra seems like a natural choice given its target audience and price range, while it is still unclear which models of the Apple Watch will be the first to adopt the change. Customers who wear the watch outside may benefit from the increased brightness. It’s important to note that Samsung may also be researching Micro-LED technology for wearables, contrary to recent reports that imply Apple is the sole business doing so.
Making the transition to Micro-LED technology will require the assistance of businesses like LG Display. It will be interesting to see how and when these digital behemoths integrate Micro-LED as the sector develops further.
