The report says that Samsung aims to beat LG to the market with its QHD (2560x1440p resolution) smartphone. LG’s upcoming G3 smartphone is rumoured to pack this high-resolution display panel.
However, neither manufacturer will be the first to launch a QHD smartphone. Chinese manufacturer Vivo launched Xplay 3S with QHD or 2K display in December 2013. Soon thereafter, another Chinese company, Oppo, unveiled its own QHD display phone.
Apart from the high-resolution screen, the premium version of Galaxy S5 is said to have a metal body, 20MP rear camera, 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB RAM. The rumour mill also says that Galaxy S5’s premium variant will also come with an eight-core processor option in markets where 4G penetration is low.
In contrast, the original Galaxy S5 has a plastic body, 16MP camera on the back and 2GB RAM; the smartphone comes with Snapdragon 801 as well as eight-core processor options as well.
Before the launch of HTC One (M8), reports said that Samsung was waiting for the Taiwanese manufacturer to launch the successor to its 2013 flagship smartphone. Both HTC One and One (M8) feature metal shells and are considered the best Android smartphones in terms of design. On the other hand, Samsung has long been slammed for sticking to plastic while building its top-end smartphones by both consumers and reviewers.
Samsung last year beat LG to the market with the world’s first curved screen smartphone, named Galaxy Round. While Samsung Galaxy Round remains limited to the South Korean market only, LG has launched its curved screen smartphone G Flex in various countries, including India.
