Microsoft Shuns Support For SQL Server 2005

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer leaves the stage after the last opening Microsoft keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show opening in Las VegasMicrosoft on Tuesday shunned the support for its SQL Server 2005, following which enterprises utilizing the software will no more receive updates for it.
While the enterprises do possess the option of transiting to SQL Server 2008 or SQL 2014, the process is expected to take significant time, particularly if they have not been preparing for it off late.
What is alarming here is the prediction by analysts that a continued usage of SQL server 2005 may invite significant security risks now. A security intrusion comes as a nightmare for any organization which not only poses risks to its financial resources, but also tarnishes its reputation among its customers.
The compatibility of applications, already running on software’s 2005 version will also come as a major hurdle for businesses to switch to SQL server 2014 overnight. Industry experts recommend, that businesses, before initiating the transition process should first undergo a comprehensive assessment of their financial and legal structure.
Moving on to Microsoft’s Azure Cloud services also comes as a viable option in this regard as it eliminates the bulky tasks associated with the purchase of a new server and configuration of applications on it. Enterprises should also start considering the replacement for SQL server 2008, as its support expires in 2019, to avoid the misery beforehand, believe experts.
