Microsoft Spreads Business Through Its Cloud offtering Via Localised Data Centers

Microsoft is hoping to get a lot of business through its Digital Indiacloud offering via localised data centers. As part of the Digital India initiative, the government is urging multinational firms to host data locally to put at bay security issues.

Bhaskar Pramanik, Microsoft India’s chairman stated that its local data centres can offer vast computing power that the government can utilise. He stated “The availability of Microsoft cloud services through local data centres has the potential to make Digital India a reality”. Currently, Microsoft is operating three data centers in India, namely Chennai, Mumbai and Pune. Apart from this, the company operated over 100 data centres in 40 countries.

To date, Microsoft has made an investment of more than $15 billion in cloud infrastructure globally. In September, Microsoft made an announcement regarding the availability of commercial cloud services including Microsoft Azure and Office 365, of the three data centers, that are hyper-scalable with thousands of servers, tremendous storage capability, and huge network capacity.

Pramanik feels that Microsoft’s data centres are in a good position to roll out several government-to-citizen services encompassing egovernance, financial inclusion, healthcare and education programmes that can positively impact 1.25 billion Indians.

Microsoft will be relying on India’s outstanding ecommerce growth. Firms like Snapdeal, Ola and JustDial are making plans to utilise a variety of its cloud offerings which include advanced services like machine learning, Bing and Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana.
