Motorola’s latest smartphone concept isn’t entirely novel, but the advent of flexible displays adds a new dimension. Motorola has previously showcased rollable and foldable phone concepts, but this time, they’re introducing a bendable display.
In this venture, the Lenovo-owned brand presents a concept phone display that can literally encircle your wrist. Referred to as an “adaptive display,” it exemplifies the potential of flexible screens in shaping the future of smartphones. This display can be molded into various forms to suit your needs.
When laid flat, its 6.9-inch screen functions like a standard phone, offering a complete Android experience. It can then be transformed into different stand modes. In the upright position, it provides a more compact Android experience on a 4.6-inch display, ideal for video calls. Alternatively, it can be wrapped around your wrist to replicate the Razr Plus’s cover screen experience.
While Motorola isn’t the first to explore bendable and flexible phone concepts, the growing success of foldable phones from major companies like Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, and Motorola suggests that the time may be ripe for flexible displays. The resurgence of retro flip phones in the mainstream further highlights this trend.
Nonetheless, it’s important to note that a phone with a bendable display, such as Motorola’s concept, is not likely to hit stores anytime soon. Such innovations are typically experimental, and companies proceed cautiously due to challenges like durability and cost associated with foldable designs.
