The Wireless Power Consortium today unveiled a new Qi2 wireless charging standard (WPC). It was developed by Apple and other group members and ought to improve the speed and efficiency of wireless charging. Qi2 will take the place of the Qi standard (pronounced chee-two). The latest model features a special Magnetic Power Profile that enables devices to perfectly align to the charger, resulting in faster charging rates and lower losses. This is the main distinction.
According to Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the WPC, consumers are worried about which products are Qi0Certified and which employ Qi technology but do not have a certificate from the Consortium. The new standard should provide solutions for these issues, and Qi2 will act as the global standard and interoperability.
Popular firms like Samsung or Google currently use the Qi technology for wireless charging on their smartphones, smartwatches, and audio devices but are not Qi-certified due to their subpar implementation of the technology. Both companies are WPC members.
According to Struhsaker, switching to Qi2 with magnets will enable you to purchase less chargers and cords, which is a positive move for sustainability. At the end of this year, the first Qi2-certified mobile phones and chargers will be available.
