The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is going to develop power projects to the tune of 6.25 GW in Andhra Pradesh. This will involve the construction of a 4 GW coal-fired thermal plant at Puttaparthi as well as a 2.25 GW solar power plant. This is in line with India’s mission to set up 100GW of solar by 2022. As per Indian Power Minister, Piyush Goyal’s announcement at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s annual partnership summit, “The progress of Andhra Pradesh is evident from the fact that this newly formed state could overcome a huge power crisis and become a power surplus state today.” He also stated that Andhra Pradesh’s success can also be attributed to it being a new state that may overcome a huge power crisis and become a power surplus state. NTPC had also chosen SunEdison in November last year for the development of ten solar farms totalling 500MW of capacity in Andhra Pradesh. India is also going to make an announcement regarding three to four ultra mega power projects in the 4,000MW class in the coming few months. India may also be rolling out a coal linkage policy for the power sector in the coming three months. Last April, NTPC had also made an announcement regarding its plans for 5,000MW of solar power capacity in India in the span of two years. This was aligned with its strategy of setting up 15,000MW of solar capacity in the coming seven years.
