Recently, the nubia brand unveiled the Red Magic 8 Pro, a gaming smartphone. The ZTE nubia Red Magic 8 Pro, which has a 6,000 mAh battery with 80W fast charging, and the ZTE nubia Red Magic 8 Pro+, which has a smaller 5,000 mAh battery but 165W quicker charging, are essentially two separate phones.
Although nubia kept the overall set of capabilities and design the same — both the Pro and the Pro+ share the same chipset, cameras, footprint, and software — the Plus edition also offers extra RAM and storage options. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is included in the two Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro handsets. For greater game effects, including enhanced sound details, colours, touch sensitivity, and haptic vibration feedback, it is paired with a Red Magic R2 chip. The display is a 6.8″ AMOLED with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a touch sampling rate of up to 960 Hz. There is no punch-hole design at all because, like the predecessor Red Magic 7 Pro, the 16 MP selfie camera is located underneath the display.
There are three cameras on the back, speaking of which. The camera’s main sensor is a 50 MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 sensor with 1.0 m pixel size and a 1/1.57″ size. Additionally, there is an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2 MP macro sensor, but a gaming phone doesn’t really need such features.
Gaming performance is more important, because we can’t have a powerful phone without good cooling. The ICE 11.0 set of cooling features is included in the nubia Red Magic 8 Pro variants, and it includes many layers of graphite sheets and a 3D vapour chamber with a 2,068 cu.mm volume. A graphite film now covers the entire screen and the side fan is currently operating at 20,000 revolutions per minute.
Nubia enhanced the phone’s design with nine distinct antennas placed around the body for better connectivity. On top, there is a 3.5 mm audio connector, and on the bottom, there is a USB-C port for charging. A hard trigger is once more included for the gaming mode, and two shoulder keys at the top (really on the right side) support 520 Hz touch sampling.
The 6,000 mAh battery of the nubia Red Magic 8 Pro has an 8C architecture (eight different cells for heat management). The retail packaging includes an 80W charger that should go from 0 to 100% in 35 minutes. The Red Magic smartphone’s battery is also the largest one ever.
The Red Magic 8 Pro+ follows next. To create place for the necessary circuitry that handles power distribution, safety management, and general protection, nubia reduced the battery to 5,000 mAh in order to deliver 165W rapid charging, the fastest in a Red Magic smartphone. We highly doubt that the 165W charger, which is a GaN adapter with USB-C, would leave China because it must pass stringent safety inspections in order to be approved globally.
Starting at CNY3,999, the nubia Red Magic 8 Pro is available for pre-order or reservation. It comes in three memory configurations: 8/128 GB, 8/256 GB, and 12/256 GB, all in the colour black. The latter is also rumoured to have a transparent back, however it is not currently on the market.
Three memory configurations are available for the nubia Red Magic 8 Pro+: 12/256 GB, 16/512 GB, and 16/1 TB. Although each of them will eventually be available with a transparent back for CNY200 more, prices start at CNY5,199 for the Black variant. On December 28 at 10 AM local time, the first sale is expected. Both JD.com and Nubia’s own web store carry the phone.
