ITVoice News: Look just 7-8 years backwards and life was so different. If there was an Internet connection around us, the best addiction used to be Orkut. Indians got acquainted with the social networking phrase with Orkut only. Orkut was an instant hit among the young generation as it was the best possible thing to stay in touch with old buddies. Orkut was voted as MTV India Youth Icon in 2007. Apart from India, Orkut was quite popular in Brazil too.
There were two reasons why we loved Orkut – it was very simple, easy-to-use and content was very comfortable. Orkut’s old version was loved the most because of its simplicity and also the best ever privacy controls. There was no concept of ‘shared‘ content and it was the best advantage of Orkut. Orkut also used to prevent pestering as you were able to stay aware who are viewing your profiles. Orkut was just for communication and nothing else. But then the bad day arrived for Orkut as soon as it started imitating Facebook.
Facebook was becoming more popular and was pulling people from Orkut database. To stay in the limelight, Orkut took a wrong step – to change itself. Users got a huge blow as Orkut got a new difficult version. By 2009-2010, Facebook became prevalent across every household and community, so Google also lost its interest in Orkut. In June 2014, Google announced that they are shutting down Orkut on 30 September, 2014 and finally the day has arrived. For today, you are still allowed to export your photo albums to Google+ and two more years are there to save your Orkut profile, scraps, testimonials and community posts using Google Takeout.
