Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the initial section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor and launched the NaMo Bharat (formerly known as RapidX) train, connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot.
The 17-km priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor is set to open for passengers on October 21. The RRTS is designed as a rail-based, semi-high-speed, high-frequency commuter transit system with a design speed of 180 Kmph, providing high-speed trains for intercity commuting every 15 minutes, potentially increasing to every 5 minutes as needed.
A total of eight RRTS corridors have been planned for development in the National Capital Region (NCR), with three corridors prioritized for implementation in Phase-I. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is one of these corridors and is expected to cost over Rs 30,000 crore.
The project aims to connect Delhi to Meerut in under an hour, passing through urban centers like Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar. Prime Minister Modi interacted with school children and the crew of the NaMo Bharat during the inauguration ceremony.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also attended the event. The construction of the RRTS Corridor is being undertaken by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture between the Indian central government and the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The entire 82.15 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is scheduled to be operational by June 2025.
