Qualcomm Incorporated announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and its subsidiaries, recently extended the Qualcomm Vuforia™ platform with the release of Vuforia 2.5, which includes text recognition and improved tracking for a broader range of images. These capabilities are critical tools for brands and developers creating next generation mobile vision experiences. Qualcomm Vuforia 2.5 SDK is a product of Qualcomm Austria Research Center GmbH.
Text recognition gives apps the ability to read, enabling developers, content owners, and brand owners to build a new generation of educational experiences and enhance apps with camera based data entry. Vuforia 2.5 SDK supports English text recognition and comes with a word list of more than 100,000 commonly used words that the app can load at runtime or a developer may adapt the word list for a specific application’s use case. Vuforia also expands support for a broader range of images to include line and vector art, such as logos and maps. In addition, key improvements in tracking robustness deliver up to 5x improvement in tracking during abrupt motion and up to 2x improvement in stability of augmented content (when compared with Vuforia 2.0 SDK). In particular, it enables more complete experiences in scenarios where the augmentation is tall, the target is partially covered, or the lighting is weak.
Vuforia continues to witness significant growth and widespread adoption among leading consumer brands within the growing AR industry. “We’ve seen explosive growth over the past year, with leading brands like Audi, Johnson & Johnson and LEGO turning to Vuforia to provide innovative ways to extend their brands,” said Jay Wright, vice president of business development at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “With the release of Vuforia 2.5 SDK, we are introducing even more options for both brands and developers to create superior vision-based experiences.
Vuforia also was recently recognized for its industry leadership with the Best AR SDK award at the Augmented World Expo 2013, the largest event in the AR ecosystem. The criteria for this award included quality of SDK, user experience, and impact.
Vuforia is supported by a global ecosystem of more than 60,000 developers in 130 countries and has powered more than 4,500 apps for iOS and Android devices.
