Jio Platforms – Reliance Industries’ telecom and tech division has quietly launched its first laptop on the same lines of the JioPhone. The telecom giant has entered this new product category in a bid to rapidly expands its offerings along with its telecom services. The laptop has been christened – the JioBook and runs a custom Android-based OS called the JioOS. This software experience supports vernacular languages and has been “optimized for superior performance”. A big marketing focus with the JioBook is the ‘manufactured in India’ tag, which is one of the reason why the JioBook has been attractively priced at as low as Rs. 15,799/- which can lower down further if we consider some bank discounts and cashbacks.
The JioBook comes bundled with the Microsoft 365 suite of apps and the usual bunch of Jio apps like Jio Cinema, Jio Health, MyJio, Jio Security, etc. While Reliance showcased the JioBook at Indian Mobile Congress trade show a few weeks back, the device has been in development for over two years.
As for the specifications of the JioBook, they are certainly at the top of the line. It features an 11.6-inch HD display that comes with a resolution of 1366 x 768. The laptop is powered by a 64-bit, 2GHz octa-core processor by Qualcomm and comes along with 2GB of RAM. For storage, the laptop sports a 128GB of flash storage and can last up to eight hours on a single a charge. As was expected, the JioBook is carrier locked and ships with an embedded Jio sim card which allows it to be have 4G LTE services.
Previously, Jio Platforms has launched the JioPhone Next smartphone which went on sale in 2021. To develop that phone, Google and Jio Platforms had partnered up and provided a custom Android operating system for an extremely affordable smartphone. As mentioned above, with the JioBook, the company seems to be going after the same mantra in the laptop segment as well.
