Samsung launched its newest flagship smartphones — Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ — in India last month. Both handsets have now gone on sale. It’s worth noting that the units pre-ordered by customers already started shipping earlier this week.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are priced at Rs 57,900 (MOP) and Rs 64,900 (MOP) respectively. The smartphones can be purchased from third-party offline retailers, Samsung’s E-store and Flipkart.
The duo also comes with a Reliance Jio offer, wherein customers can get 28GB+28GB data for 8 months at Rs 309 each. The two smartphones include AKG earphones in the box.
Those who want to buy Samsung’s DeX docking station can do so by shelling out Rs 8,999. The new wireless charger has to be purchased separately as well, and costs Rs 4,499. Both Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have dual-SIM support and come in Midnight Black and Maple Gold colour variants. The Galaxy S8+ is additionally available in Coral Blue colour.
The highlight of the two smartphones is the company’s own digital assistant — Bixby. Samsung claims that the assistant can do much more than its rivals, including being able to handle any smartphone-related task that can be managed by touch. One of Bixby’s features — Bixby Voice — is yet to roll out to all users.
Running Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, Samsung Galaxy S8 has an edge-to-edge curved ‘Infinity display’ with QHD+ (2960×1440 pixels) resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by an octa-core Exynos 8895 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
The bigger Galaxy S8+ sports a 6.2-inch ‘Infinity Display’ with QHD+ (2960×1440 pixels) resolution. Apart from the bigger 3,500mAh battery (as opposed to the S8’s 3,000mAh unit), both Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have identical hardware specifications.
For imaging duties, the duo has a 12MP dual-pixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and OIS. There is also an 8MP autofocus front camera with f/1.7 aperture. Some of the connectivity features included are Wi-Fi, NFC, USB Type-C, GPS and Bluetooth 5.0.
Having dust and water resistance, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have pressure-sensitive Home buttons built right into the their displays. The fingerprint sensor is at the back, next to the primary camera. There’s also an iris scanner with facial recognition functionality. Needless to say, the duo also support the Samsung Pay digital payment platform.
