Samsung: Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic won’t be discontinued after Gear S3 launch

Samsung launched its Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic smartwatches at a pre-IFA 2016 keynote event in Berlin,Germany. Both these smartwatches are successors to the company’s Gear S2 and Gear S2 smartwatches, which were launched at IFA 2015 last year. But in case you still want to buy the older model, you can, as Samsung has confirmed that the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will still continue to be sold.
As reported by Android Central website, Samsung will continue selling the Gear S2 wearables and even update them to the latest OS versions. The updates will arrive by the end of this year and will bring new features that are included in the latest Gear S3.
It has also been mentioned that since the two watches will be running the latest OS versions by the end of this year, they will probably get a price cut when the Gear S3 hits the shelves.
To recall, the newly launched Samsung Gear S3 features a 1.3-inch circular Super Amoled display of 360×360 pixel resolution and 278 ppi pixel density. It comes with rotating bezel along with enhanced new features. The smartwatch also has a full colour ‘Always On’ display with the recently announced Corning Gorilla Glass SR+. Powering the wearable is a dual-core 1GHz processor paired with 768MB of RAM, which is more than the Gear S2’s 512MB of RAM. The internal storage of the smartwatch stays the same at 4GB.
Samsung Gear S3 comes with an IP68 rating that makes it dust and water resistant. It also comes with a heart rate sensor. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and Glonass, with a 380mAh battery rounding off the spec sheet.
Besides wireless charging, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic also come with 22mm straps. The only difference between the two devices is that the Frontier version weighs 62 grams and supports 3G/LTE connectivity, while the Classic version weighs 57 grams but misses out on 3G/LTE connectivity.
