Samsung will be launching its long-rumoured Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagship smartphones at its ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event, scheduled on March 29 in New York+ . Both handsets have leaked numerous times over the past few months. And now, a report has provided some details about the smartphone’s security feature.
It has been already rumoured that the Galaxy S8 handset(s) will featuring an iris scanner for an additional layer of security. But a new report from The Investor website has now claimed that the smartphone(s) will also have facial recognition technology.
So what is the need of including facial recognition feature in addition to the iris scanner? A Samsung official has stated that it’s because iris scanners often have speed and accuracy issues.
“Due to some limits of iris scanning such as speed and accuracy, we have decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8,” the official said. It has also been added that with facial recognition, the upcoming smartphones will take less than 0.01 seconds to be unlocked.
It’s also been mentioned that the South Korean tech company is still testing prototypes, which is a bit hard to believe, considering that the official unveiling is a couple of weeks away.
It is worth noting that besides iris scanner and facial recognition, the company is expected to feature a fingerprint sensor at the back.
On a related note, Samsung is also being rumoured to sell its refurbished Galaxy Note 7 in South Korea+ . The speculations regarding the same have surfaced because of Samsung’s MWC 2017 conference, which was disrupted by a Green Peace protester, asking the company to recycle Note 7 components.
