Samsung Regaines No. 1 Position In The Smartphone Market
Samsung has regained the number one position in the smartphone market in the first quarter. However, its market share dropped from 31 percent to 24 percent, as per a study conducted by a research firm.
Samsung and its close competitor Apple were tied with shipments of 74.5 million smartphones each in the fourth quarter of 2014. While the South Korean company shipped 83.2 million smartphones in the first quarter, Apple could only ship 61.2 million phones in the first quarter.
Though, American multinational technology company, Apple is popular for its latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones, but Samsung’s global performance has “stabilized sufficiently well” in the quarter. However, Apple has shown a significant rise in its share from 15.3 percent in the same quarter last year to 17.7 percent.
Globally, the smartphone shipments have increased up to 21 percent annually (from 285 million phones in the first quarter of last year to 345 million). Indicating increased penetration and maturity of key markets like China, U.S., and Europe, global smartphone growth has slowed to 21 percent from 33 percent on an annualized basis.
