Sony announces new policy for software updates to its top-end Android smartphones
Japanese tech giant Sony has announced an official Android upgrade policy for its Xperia smartphones. The company has said that it will offer latest Android updates for the period of two years to all the premium Xperia smartphones.
The company also added that the Android update for the mid-segment and entry level Xperia phones will be subject to the hardware compatibility of the device.
According to Xperiablog, Sony said, “may choose not to upgrade a mid-range or entry-level device if testing does not meet our exacting standards and we feel the hardware isn’t capable of delivering a stable user experience.” Sony Xperia smartphone users can manually check for the latest software updates by entering the IMEI number here .
The blog also stated that the Sony Mobile’s security update programme will also incorporate updates from relevant third-party vendors, Android security patches and Xperia-specific patches. The company also revealed that the security update might be rolled out in the form of firmware upgrades. In an official statement Sony said, “Because the Security Update Program is available to our entire premium line, select mid-range devices – timing and phasing may vary by carrier.”
Along with this, the company has also revealed the list of Xperia smartphones which will soon get the Meltdown and Spectre patches. The list of smartphones include Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia L1, Xperia XA1 Plus, Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra, Xperia L2, Xperia X Performance, Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XZ1, and Xperia XZ1 Compact. The update will also carry the security patch for the month of January.
