Sunbird, a company that developed an iMessage app for Android, has decided to close down its service due to security apprehensions

Sunbird, the app designed to bring iMessage functionality to Android, has temporarily shut down due to security concerns. The company sent a notification to users stating that it was investigating security issues raised by the Nothing Chats iMessage app. Following this, Sunbird informed users that its usage had been paused, with plans to update them when ready to proceed.

Sunbird was introduced in late 2022, offering a unified messaging app for various platforms, including iMessage, SMS/MMS, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. It enabled Android users to send iMessage “blue bubbles” to iPhone users and claimed to provide end-to-end encryption and confidential messaging for these Android-to-iPhone conversations. However, the security of these claims has come into question, leading to the temporary shutdown.

Sunbird recently collaborated with smartphone manufacturer Nothing to launch “Nothing Chats,” a messaging app promising iMessage compatibility. Concerns arose over security practices, such as sending Apple ID credentials in an unencrypted form. Nothing subsequently removed the Nothing Chats app from the Google Play Store.

Texts.com investigated Sunbird and found vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to intercept messages and media attachments, while Sunbird employees reportedly had direct access to user data. Sunbird insisted on the security of its service but has not provided detailed responses to security concerns.

As a precaution, existing Sunbird and Nothing Chats users are advised to change their Apple ID passwords, remove the apps, and take additional steps to eliminate their data. Users are also cautioned against downloading the apps if reinstated until security concerns are addressed adequately.
