Senior IAS officer and Telecom Secretary Rakesh Garg will hold additional charge of Secretary in the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) as per an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training.
Garg, a 1980 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, attains the position for three months after R.S. Sharma took voluntary retirement from the post of DeitY secretary to take charge as Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman.
Apart from holding a master’s in mathematics from IIT-Kanpur, Sharma also has a master’s degree in computer science from the University of California, Riverside.
Being a tech savvy official, Sharma had played a key role during the execution of Aadhaar project besides designing the roadmap for Digital India strategy adopted by the government.
Meanwhile, he has also made key digital services like digital locker and is known for swift execution of schemes to push electronics manufacturing across India.
Interestingly, he has been appointed as a new chairman of TRAI at the time of net neutrality row. While Sharma attains the position for three years, he succeeds Rahul Khullar who retired on May 14.
