Microsoft’s, Window Phone offering had been seen as an attractive option to Android and iOS phones. Over the years, there have been several indicators regarding its failure to position itself as a thrid mobile ecosystem. It has been observed that off late there hasn’t been many launches from Microsoft. Adding to this is the alarming dip in sales, i.e. 10.5 million sales in the previous quarter to 4.5 million sales in this quarter. This implies a 57 per cent dip. When compared to iOS and Android phones that have made a sale of 4.5 billion, Microsoft and Nokia have sold only 110 million Windows Phones. According to IDC, 400 million phones were sold in the recent quarter implying that only 1.1 per cent of them were Lumia Windows Phones. Microsoft has no flagship handsets as of now and the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL were both disappointing having unfinished Windows 10 Mobile software. There have been rumors regarding Microsoft developing its Surface Phones. However, it still has to make it to the market. Windows Phones are lacking in hardware, sales, and have less than 2 per cent market share. Hence, with Lumia sales taking a steep dive and the company not coming out with a broad number of phone handsets, it can be safely said that the reign of Windows Phones has come to an end.
