The IT minister’s statement regarding iPhone hacking alerts claims

Following claims by several opposition leaders in India that they received notifications from Apple warning of potential state-sponsored attacks on their iPhones, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed the government’s concern. He mentioned that the information provided by Apple in these notifications appeared vague and lacked specificity. The alerts, received by politicians from various parties, including the Trinamool Congress and Congress, raised concerns among users in approximately 150 countries. In response, Minister Vaishnaw posted five messages on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the government had requested Apple’s assistance in the investigation to provide accurate information regarding the alleged attacks.

The notifications received by these politicians mentioned “state-sponsored attacks” on their devices. However, Apple’s communication on the issue stated that these notifications might be based on incomplete or imperfect information and some could be false alarms or undetected attacks. Furthermore, Apple assured that Apple IDs were securely encrypted on their devices, making unauthorized access nearly impossible without the user’s explicit consent. This encryption was designed to protect user privacy and ensure the security of Apple IDs.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the privacy and security of all citizens, expressing the government’s intention to thoroughly investigate these notifications. The government’s decision to involve Apple in the investigation aimed to obtain real, accurate information regarding the alleged state-sponsored attacks and address the widespread speculation surrounding the matter.

In summary, the Indian government expressed concerns about the vague and non-specific nature of Apple’s notifications regarding potential state-sponsored attacks on iPhones received by opposition leaders. They have requested Apple’s cooperation in providing accurate information for the investigation in order to protect the privacy and security of its citizens. The notifications have sparked widespread speculation and raised questions about the extent of these alleged attacks.
