TRAI’s latest mandate directs telecom operators to offer call and SMS-only tariff plans

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the Telecom Consumers Protection (Twelfth Amendment) Regulations 2024, introducing several consumer-friendly changes to telecom policies. Among the key reforms is a mandate for telecom operators to offer tariff plans exclusively providing SMS and voice call benefits.

This move aims to benefit approximately 150 million 2G users and those who use secondary SIM cards solely for voice calls and SMS, allowing them to pay only for the services they need. Currently, 2G users often have to purchase costly plans that include unnecessary data benefits. This change could impact operators like Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi), which provide 2G services, while Jio, which operates solely on 4G and 5G networks, remains unaffected.

Meanwhile, telecom companies continue to explore ways to boost their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) by offering bundled plans that include data, calling, SMS, and even OTT platform benefits.

TRAI stated that the new regulations were shaped based on consumer surveys and stakeholder feedback, with the goal of helping users get maximum value for their money.

Additionally, the authority has mandated telecom operators to extend the validity of Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) from 90 days to 365 days. These STVs, which are cheaper than regular plans and offer tailored benefits, will now provide consumers with longer-lasting value.
