ITVoice News: Next month a new release is coming from Ubuntu, Ubuntu 14.10. Several releases back a change in the Ubuntu API for the Messaging Menu clipped the integration wings of the libpurple-based instant-messaging application. Now a new Unity Integration has been added to the upcoming update which will enable users to choose to see unread count badges on the Unity Launcher.
With this new feature, users can now choose between unread or elapsed time in the messaging menu and curb the excessive IRC chat notifications. After the last change in the Ubuntu API, a third-party plug-in was quickly put together along with some new features. But at that time it was not compiled into the Ubuntu package which was available from the Ubuntu Software Center.
A bug was submitted for the same, which has been fixed in the new update. Ubuntu 14.10 will also stock the Unity-toting version of Pidgin in the Ubuntu Software Center. Now it works with both the Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher out of the box without much hassle. To see the original bug report click here. Right now if you are with a development version of Utopic, then you will get an update to Pidgin very soon.
