National Public Radio (NPR), a US-based media organization, has recently joined other companies in banning the use of AI tools like ChatGPT and Bard. NPR sent an email to its employees explaining the ban, citing concerns about the authenticity and credibility of data generated by these AI tools. The email emphasized the need for comprehensive policies, editorial guidance, and processes around the use of Generative AI (GAI) to ensure NPR’s ability to innovate and succeed in the evolving media landscape.
The company clarified that it is not against AI usage but is working diligently to develop a plan that harnesses the opportunities of GAI while safeguarding their assets and people. Employees were instructed not to input any editorial work into AI tools without approval from the Standards and Practices Editor, including drafts and the recording of voices or generating images and videos.
Other organizations, such as Samsung, have also taken similar measures to restrict or ban the use of AI tools, highlighting the growing concerns about data credibility and ethical considerations in AI technology usage.
