Android 14 users will no longer have the ability to view app notifications through the traditional long-press action on the home screen. Previously, Android users could access notifications from a specific app by long-pressing its icon, enabling a quick preview of available notifications along with options to display more. Additionally, this feature allowed users to dismiss notifications through swiping. However, recent reports indicate that Google has eliminated this functionality with Android 14.
According to 9to5Google, the latest version of Android replaces the notification preview with app shortcuts when long-pressing an icon. The new options include App info, Pause app, and Widgets, presented as a full list rather than being integrated into a floating list with notifications. Google reportedly introduced this change during the Android 14 Beta Program, confirming it as the intended behavior and indicating that it would not be reversed.
While Google has not provided a specific reason for this alteration, user feedback suggests that some individuals have expressed a desire for the return of the notification preview feature. Despite this, Google may stick to the revised functionality based on usage statistics and patterns. The removal of the long-press notification preview is not anticipated to significantly impact most users, and Google is not planning substantial alterations to the app long-press menu in Android 14.
Last month, Google released the stable version of Android 14 for Pixel devices, marking the beginning of the rollout. The removal of the long-press notification preview was confirmed during the Android 14 Beta Program in the summer, with Google emphasizing that this change was intentional and would not be addressed.
